FBBP #74 – Review: The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard

Eddie Campbell and Dan Best’s new graphic novel from First Second is reviewed, alongside this week’s “Yes, This is Being Published” subject, DC Decisions #1.

John McCain isn’t running for president in the DCU, so it’s Leotard, not Decisions that makes Joe think of his grandpa and his heroic yarns. Barack Obama isn’t running in the DCU either, so Chris is left comparing the band of eternally hopeful dreamers in Leotard to the characters of Terry Gilliam.

  1. Quick Note: Eddie Campbell is from Scotland, he’s merely been banished to Australia. We apologize for insinuating that he’s from there.

  2. I have a vague feeling DC boooks are going to be featured in YTIBP more often than Marvel books.

  3. Oh HitTheTargets, don’t be so sure! And stay tuned for this week’s installment!

  4. Quite frankly, “Dark Seed” is much more sinister. It’s sounds like he impregnates a pure abysmal nihilism with his blackjuice (a dark Pynchon’s “Logos Spermatikos”!) like the sweet Devil-dude from The Filth. Get on it, Morrison! Manjuice, man! MANJUICE!

And it’s not “Jesus”. It was “Zezus”. Him and Zeus were bad transmissions of The True One, “Xenu”.

And between Moore’s take of 19-20 century transition fiction (and the same in Pynchon’s Against the Day), I’ll have to buy Campbell’s book now.

ps: Zezus, Lois is not fucking republican. I don’t even care for the character, but really. She probably has daddy issues projected against the military, and is a good reporter (not a single decent investigative reporter could be republican — the old liberal-media-myth breaker: reporters might be ‘liberal’, but their bosses’ interests just aren’t). Peas and rice, that should be more offensive than “Superman drinks beer”. Comics has a socks-smell antisocial ‘conservatism’ streak, no?
