FBBP #124 – Greek Street & Unwritten

Funnybook Babylon has notice a trend: first issues from Vertigo are often given lukewarm or negative reviews, but once the series develops, we change our tune. It happened with Air, it happened with Young Liars (at least for some of us), and as we’ve previously panned the first issues of Greek Street (Episode 107) and Unwritten (Episode 99), we decided to give each series a second chance to impress. So reviewed today:

Unwritten v1: Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity by Mike Carey and Peter Gross

Greek Street v1: Blood Calls for Blood v1 by Peter Milligan and Davide Gianfelice

Did either book turn things around? Will second volumes of either book be added to the Funnybook Babylon Library? Listen to find out!

FBBP #119 – Hellblazin’ Milligan

This episode, we take a look at Peter Milligan’s recently started run on Hellblazer, as one of the original British Invasion writers becomes the latest in his gang to tackle one of the longest running monthly American comic books in print.

Does Milligan still have “it”? Does John Constantine? Are they both self-sabotaging, self-destructive British gentlemen of a certain age? Listen and find out!

FBBP #104 – Two Greeks and a Cry for Justice

Technical difficulties and summer vacation put this recording through the wringer, leading to compromised sound quality and a lack of timeliness. BE FOREWARNED!

Since we recorded this podcast, Justice League: Cry for Justice has been dogpiled by an all-star cast of bloggers. It was relatively fresh news when we recorded, but it’s still a pretty bad comic!

Additionally, we look at two books about Greek emigres, David Mazzucchelli’s Asterios Polyp and Peter Milligan & Davide Gianfelice’s Greek Street #1. One of them is an easy lock for Book of the Year, while the other is the latest in a line of disappointing first issues from Vertigo. Which is which? Listen and find out!

FBB Valentine’s Day Weekend: 25 Things Pedro Loves about Comics

On the worst day of the year for single people and absent-minded married men, Team FBB stood back and thought of the things that we love about comics. We capped it at 25 so that this series of articles would be completed sometime this year. One interesting thing that I came across while compiling my list was how many of these selections were based on visual storytelling moments. I’m starting to realize that I enjoy the art side of comics more than the writing.

FBBP #71 – Back to School with a Song

Jamaal is back and it’s time for him to pay the piper! What song must he sing? Stay tuned to the end, true believers!

In the spoken word portion of the podcast, we discuss the new Secret Six, Marvel Apes and Sub-Mariner: The Depths mini-series, and spin off into a larger discussion of Depths author Peter Milligan’s other recent series Infinity Inc. and The Programme. Milligan has built up a lot of goodwill with series like X-Statix, Human Target and Shade the Changing Man, but how do his newer books stack up? Listen and learn!

Finally, our resident canary in the mineshaft Chris has decided to join the MARCH ON ULTIMATUM, and gives a recap of Aron Coliete’s initial Ultimate X-Men arc. In this metaphor, the canary has died and had its corpse repeatedly defiled.
