I know I'm late to the party but what if the El Penitente, is in fact Bruce Wayne?

The reasoning behind this is similar to to that posed in the article but with a touch of Morrison's own outlook as to time paradoxes. In his IGN interview dated January 26th 2010 Grant states:

"There are no paradoxes. If you go back in time and do something then all it does is contribute to the world in which you already lived where you became a time traveler."

This to me leads me to think that Bruce/Batz can't save anyone who shouldn't have been saved in his prior realities history. He can't save his parents anymore than he can kill James Gordon before he was born. It all has to make sense regardless.

Taking this thinking I reckon Bruce would accept that perception of 'evil' or 'murdering' due to his inability to stop it and become the most evil man on the planet - only to reveal his dupe once he is able to have a positive impact on the world again and is well aware of where everyone who is doing evil is.

He can do greater good by being the evilest of people up until his release from fate.

Just a thought which semi-mirrors your David. I hope you like it :)

I really enjoyed Luke Cage Noir also, but in all fairness to the writers, I looked up their credits too. You mentioned Benson wrote Entourage but didn't mention that he wrote on the Bernie Mac show. And Adam Glass you mocked for doing a black sitcom but left out that he also has been a writer producer on Cold Case and The Cleaner.

I agree with the Spinning the Wheels Dark Reign approach but there were 2 books I felt did it well the DR tieins were Punisher and Secret Warriors because they used Norman and advanced their own stories at the same time (and in Frank's case took him off of the plate for the rest of Dark Reign)

To me, it's not a question of people feeling "Event Fatigue" so much as "Hype Fatigue". It's the unending stream of hype that's the problem. Everything has to be billed as the next big thing, which pressures us to give good reasons whenever we do NOT want to be reading whatever the big books are at the moment. "Are you reading Siege? Why aren't you reading Blackest Night? Are you excited for the Heroic Age? Have you checked out Doom War? Have you seen the covers to the Return of Bruce Wayne?" That's another thing: the slow, methodical release of teaser images builds the hype (and thus the pressure) even more. And all of the outlets--the comic websites, twitter, Previews, preview pages in other comics, things at conventions--are used as opportunities to stoke the fires all the time. It's just "Hype Fatigue" in general, but the most oppressive centers of this pressure-cooker are of course the events. But, I mean, the Bendis/JRJR book isn't exactly an "event", and neither is the Bruce Wayne mini-series, but there's a ton of pressure around them at the moment, readers are pressed as to whether or not they're going to "sign up".

The answer's really a simple one, though: Just buy what you would like to read, and after you've seen an advertisement for something the first time, you should never, ever pay attention to it again.

Color e-ink is the key, IMO, to putting together a viable reader. I've yet to see a backlit display that makes me want to give up print. I love my Kindle, though.

Like many, I'm curious about the iPad, but I'm not going to touch one until at least the 2nd Gen.

And Colt, I doubt the people who make such decisions really know or care that DC has lost talent to Marvel - somehow I doubt they'd be in a position to know Ed Brubaker from Ed Wood. DC always has difficulty gaining traction for b- and c-list characters, so I doubt that'd be viewed as a failing specific to Didio either. End of the day, they're making more money than they were before Didio was in charge - thus he gets promoted. I think his tenure has been a disaster on many levels, but it's pretty hard to argue with the bottom line.

Several companies are developing color "e-ink" technologies, but there's nothing being marketed yet. It will happen, though. The unlit, glare-free screen is the selling e-reader's selling point for many people.

I find the idea that Didio's been doing a good job with DC just bizarre, even trying to be really objective. Sure DC's doing better than it was before he took over, but that could just as easily be chalked up to comics as a whole becoming more visible and profitable.

Meanwhile DC's losing talent left and right to Marvel, failing to properly capitalize on exclusive talent (the Kuberts spring to mind), failing to lure promising creators to their company, instead focusing hiring untested movie/TV writers, utterly failing to gain sales traction with new characters or titles (Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Doom Patrol, Power Girl, etc.) and tanking successful franchises (JLA, JSA, Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, and Superman).

I get the feeling that DC's propped up almost entirely on the shoulders of Johns and Morrison. Were they not working on Batman and Green Lantern, and driving those franchises in directions that encourage readers to try satellite Batman and Green Lantern titles, what would DC have going for them?

It's not something that I'm particularly worried about, but then, I spend all day working in front of a screen only to get home to look at a screen all night. I even look at a screen on the subway and in bed before I sleep.

Speaking of fatigue and the Ipad, that's really my biggest concern with using it as a reader. Not even thinking about the glare issue, I stare at TVs and monitors enough during the day, when I read be it a book or a comic, I have a real hard time getting into any kind of story reading it off of a screen as I just get enough eye strain to make it annoying. That would hold me back more than anything. Is there such a thing as color e-ink? That'd be what I'd need in a portable comic reader I think.

"Contrast with Batman #655, when Bruce Wayne throws Joker in a dumpster personally - Jason Todd is more than happy to throw the baby out with the bathwater."

That wasn't Bruce Wayne that did that. It was Josef Muller, the first of the three ex-cops Dr. Hurt turned into fake Batmen.

yes, I completely agree with this theory. I always felt that the whole Dr.Hurt/black glove thing is connected with Final crisis, and Batman getting zapped by Darkseid. hurt's line about "the piece that can never fit, and there since the BEGINNING" is a strong allusion towards Bruce being stuck in time and has to make his way back from the beginning. I think hurt being the devil or some evil spirit is stupid and childish. and the point remains (no matter what the naysayers say), it was NEVER REVEALED who Dr. Hurt was at the end of RIP. I agree with David's theory, and I think it will play out this way, or pretty similar to this way. Hurt being the literal devil/satan is not a shocking revelation

It was NYCC, I'm almost sure - I was there - and he said, "When we BEGIN TO SUSPECT the identity." It's a big difference, and was the cause behind my dumb rant (I'm sure you can find it somewhere) about Batman #681 the first time I read it. But yeah, BEGIN TO SUSPECT was part of it, and he was referring to the Thomas Wayne thing, I'm fairly sure.

Brendan T: I can kind of see where you're coming from, but the argument isn't "fuck all fill-in artists forever and give me comics on time with the right creative team always". It's that people find out about these changes when everything is already signed, sealed and delivered. Since orders for comics have to be placed well in advance and are very rarely returnable, people are still recieving something entirely different than they ordered.
It's like going to a restaurant, ordering a T-bone steak and recieving a mushroom pizza. Except you can't send the pizza back to get a steak and are forced to pay for it.

Honestly, I don't mind DC doing little creative swaps to keep their line running on time. It's better than the Flash Rebirth scenario where the lynchpin book for a franchise is about four months late.

And Mavel has had more problems with lateness, so there really is a balance to it.

"how else would he have known to create a faux Batman that resembles Bane years before “Knightfall” even occurred?"

He didn't have to. The three Batmen were supposed to have been trained when Gordon was retired, which was post-Knightfall.

Other than that nitpick, this is a fantastic little bit of speculation.

To further it, what if Bruce started going insane due to the time jumping, recognized that fact, and set into motion his transformation into Hurt as a way of pitting himself against his family, the only ones he'd trust to stop him?

That would gain extra weight if you considered the Robin #175-176 RIP tie-in.

Great critiques all around -- I really appreciate the thought that goes into it, and I get more out of re-reading after hearing the comments (e.g., I pay more attention to how the art works with the story).

Any chance you could list out the titles you mentioned? I listened to the podcast while on my bike, and so wasn't able to write all that down, and, much as I enjoy your voices, have to move on to other backlogged podcasts.

Cheers and will buy drinks if you guys visit the Bay Area.

As for the geography of London in the issue not quite matching up... last I checked there wasnt a Gotham City, Star City or Metropoilis in the US, butt here was a Detroit, LA & New York. DCU USA somehow finds room (and additional population) for all of them, so I can handle DCU London having a slightly different streetscape and numbers on the busses to our real one!

Thanks for the annotations in any case. Man, has anyone ever tried annotating a range of comics not by moore or morrison and comparing them to see just how less layered most comics are?

Don Newton was a great Aquaman artist too, if I do recall.

Kathy Kane's current continuity crisis is an ongoing question, especially with multiple "Kathy Kanes" running around in the form of Kate Kane, her step-mom Catherine Kane, Bruce's old friend who was murdered Kathy Kane who was no longer Batwoman but yet who has been seen in-continuity in nods from Moore, Morrison, and more!

Current belief is that the older Kathy Kane is our current Kate Kane's aunt and namesake, especially given that her cousin Bette is also niece of Kathy, and that'd make Kathy Colonel Jake Kane's sister, possibly deceased.

Wait ... "most inexplicably Batwoman" ... I forget, is Kathy Kane out of continuity? I can still remember the Don Newton art on that old issue of Detective where she got killed ... Great bat-artist, that Newton, and not a name that regularly comes up for the pantheon.

Guy,

Nothing spoilery. Just some fun little Easter eggs that are more fun to discover on your own rather than have described.

KJ page 10 has Batman back in the Batcave. In panel 3 he places a joker card on a table. On the table is a picture of the Bat-family featuring Batman, Robin, Batgirl, (presumably) Alfred, (presumably) Gordon, Batmite, Ace the Bathound, and (most inexplicably) BATWOMAN(!). Can't say I'd ever noticed that before. Then, in panel 4, there's one of the Bat-gyros Batman and Squire fly to the mine in hanging in the background.

None of it means anything but it definately once again reinforces that Morrison is consciously referencing The Killing Joke.

Very nice. I believe this marks the first time All Three groups - the League of Assassins, Religion of Crime, and Black Glove have had themes intersect. Formerly, the League of Assassins (and specifically Talia) had come into contact with both elements, but not in the same issue or span of issues.

"Donna" is slang for a woman in England much the same way "Sheila" is slang for it in AU, and "Colleen" in Ireland.

Speaking of Joker analogues - The Pearly King of Crime and his son, a "Prince of Crime" ... the guy plays "the old-school street games" like Dominoes, Darts and Cards, and he has a fish-tank full of electric eels. And Batman meets him in Arkham looking for answers.

This guy is another Joker analogue. As probably is Dai Laffyn. Can't say about King Coal yet. Wonder who King Coal's "old lady" is, actually, and if she's someone we know like Whisper A'Daire or another Rucka guest character.

Great notes, David, thanks.
In ref. to MikeCR's comment on the Killing Joke, I appreciate his effort to let people find the whatever themselves, but ... being unable to find my copy of KJ just now, I'm hoping someone will just tell me what the stuff on page ten is. I'm supposing a post like this is meant to be kinda spoilerific, anyway, right?
