Pull List Analysis for March 26, 2007

Filed under: Pull List Analysis — David Uzumeri @ 10:38 am

Hey, and welcome to this week’s Pull List Analysis. The format will be pretty much the same as last time, so with no further ado:
Wolverine #52 (Jeph Loeb & Simone Bianchi) Batman #664 (Grant Morrison & Andy Kubert) Wonder Woman #6 (Jodi Picoult & Drew Johnson) Fantastic Four #544 (Dwayne McDuffie & Paul Pelletier) Ultimate Fantastic Four Vol. 7 (Mike Carey & Pasqual Ferry)

DC
100 Bullets #82 $2.99
52 Week #47 $2.50

Action Comics #847 $2.99
This should be interesting. This is a one-shot fill-in by Dwayne McDuffie and Renato Guedes originally meant to be placed in between parts 3 and 4 of the Johns/Donner/Kubert arc “Last Son”, but further delays have now placed three more fill-ins after this which are unrelated to the general plot. With this issue, according to solicitations, centering around Clark Kent’s friends and family and etc. and their reactions to him going into battle against Zod (in Last Son), it seems kind of a waste of a talent as great as McDuffie’s to have him not only write a fill-in issue of Action Comics, but a fill-in issue that takes place in continuity with a highly promoted storyline with a distinct writers’ voice. I’m sure the issue will be great, but it will still be a story birthed out of necessity rather than inspiration.

Batman #664 $2.99
Grant Morrison is back, and hopefully monthly. This run has been really odd but enjoyable so far, with a somewhat tongue-in-cheek introductory arc, a frankly milquetoast fill-in arc by Ostrander and Mandrake, and a bizarre prose one-off with art by the usually talented John Van Fleet working his Poser chops. Here’s hoping this book finds its direction fast.

Batman Snow TP $14.99
Blue Beetle Vol 6 #13 $2.99
The beginning of this book’s second year, it should prove to be a good jumping-on point for new readers — which it desperately needs and deserves, being easily the most original book in the DCU (despite, frankly, not even really being all that original). It’s the teen superhero formula done right and done smart, with enough twists to keep it interesting and, thanks to newcomer Rafael Albuquerque, expressive and consistent art.

Catwoman Vol 3 #65 $2.99
Connor Hawke Dragons Blood #5 $2.99
Crossing Midnight #5 $2.99
DMZ #17 $2.99
Fables #59 $2.99
Firestorm The Nuclear Man Vol 2 #34 $2.99
Another McDuffie fill-in, this time on a book already cancelled. Again, excellently executed, but what the hell?

Green Arrow Vol 8 Crawling From The Wreckage TP $12.99
Green Lantern Rebirth TP $14.99
For anyone who hasn’t read this but digs Johns’s Green Lantern, picking this up would be a good refresher course before we enter into the Sinestro Corps storyline.

Green Lantern Vol 4 #18 $2.99
Hawkgirl #62 $2.99
JSA Classified #24 $2.99
Loveless Vol 2 Thicker Than Blackwater TP $14.99
Ninja Scroll #7 $2.99
Oyayubihime Infinity Vol 4 TP $9.99
Secret Six Six Degrees Of Devastation TP $14.99
Highest quip-per-panel ratio of any book in the past ten years. Too bad someone forgot that too many quips makes for completely unrealistic dialogue and characterization. Also, a dude having sex with a hat.

Spirit Vol 6 #1 2nd Ptg $2.99
If you didn’t get it the first time, get it now. Darwyn Cooke absolutely at the top of his game.

Superman Action Comics Archives Vol 5 HC $49.99
Superman Confidential #4 $2.99
The first three issues of this were excellent, and there’s no reason this would change – however, DC has already managed to kick it out of continuity by placing Kryptonite in Clark’s childhood in Action Comics Annual #10, and the next issue isn’t even coming out until late June (and it could still get delayed further). What happened to editorial foresight and coordination?

Teen Titans Go #41 $2.25
Wetworks Vol 2 #7 $2.99
Wonder Woman Vol 3 #6 $2.99
You don’t see a bigger crapshoot than this — Jodi Picoult, Oprah Book Club mainstay, does her first comics writing… in an ongoing monthly book, for an arc that takes place as a prologue to a major linewide event. This is the most insane editorial decision I’ve ever seen in comics, and could lead to either brilliance or tripe.

Marvel
Black Panther Vol 4 #26 $2.99
Black Panther joins the Fantastic Four as a metaphorical tourniquet to stop the bleeding of sales from this book. Unfortunately, Fantastic Four doesn’t sell that well either, or at least didn’t before Civil War. This will be a big book to look to to see how Marvel’s recent event affects tie-in books’ sales even after its conclusion.

Captain America Vol 5 #25 2nd Printing Steve Epting Variant Cover $3.99
Civil War Initiative 2nd Printing Marc Silvestri Variant Cover $4.99
Daredevil Vol 2 #95 $2.99
Essential X-Men Vol 5 TP New Ptg $16.99
Fantastic Four Vol 3 #544 $2.99
Dwayne McDuffie’s third book this week, and his first that isn’t a fill-in. After being brought on to perform surgery on the mess JMS made of the FF during Civil War (and doing pretty damn well), he brings in Black Panther in Storm in time for a huge cosmic arc the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time with these characters (since Waid or arguably JMS’s first arc). Now — and this doesn’t have much to do with the quality of the book — what concerns me is that McDuffie is just on here as a fill-in write for the FF’s short-lived ‘black period’, and will be shuffled off in time for a big creative team to come on with #550, like, say, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch. Because I don’t think I could take that hat trick of McDuffie disrespect, as much as I understand a Millar/Hitch FF would make Tom Brevoort grow money out of his beard. But I’m really enjoying McDuffie’s take on the FF — ALL FOUR members — and I want to see it continue. So, uh, I guess buy this book.

Spider-Man The Visual Guide To The Complete Movie Trilogy HC $19.99
Ultimate Fantastic Four #40 $2.99
Ultimate Fantastic Four Vol 7 God War TP $16.99
Not enough people bought, or read, this. Great writing, fantastic art, and really the first cosmic story in the Ultimate Universe, ever. A lot of people found the pacing confusing, but it’ll probably hold together way better in trade — check this out, Mike Carey & Pasqual Ferry put Millar and Land to shame.

Ultimate Spider-Man #107 $2.99
Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 8 HC $29.99
Ultimate X-Men #80 $2.99
WA Civil War #1 Signed By Steve McNiven $29.99
Wolverine Vol 3 #52 Black And White Edition $2.99
Wolverine Vol 3 #52 Regular Edition $2.99
Hahahahahahhaahhahahahahah. Every cover for this arc has been interchangeable. Jeph Loeb’s hilarious predilection towards micromanaging the production of his books right down to the color and letter work comes to a climax in this hilariously over-the-top arc that features the return of late-’90s Wolverine claw-mark dialogue font. This arc has been a howler so far and I don’t see it improving any more. Gorgeous art, though, and I’m sure it’ll sell well to Loeb’s mystifying fanbase.
